Roma Traditions Women’s Figurative Romani Dance

Dancing and singing plays a special role in traditional Roma communities. It is a pivotal part of our identity and we are able to express our belonging through music and dance. We present a young Roma girl from the Roma community in Pilisvörösvár called Kristina Sárközy on our home-made video. Her family has been teaching dance for generations. They get the young girls and boys aged 4-5 to stand in the middle of the room where the rest of the family shows them Gypsy dance steps. They learn these with time. The boy has to accompany the girl into the dancing space and wait for the girl to accept his invitation. When dancing, the aim is to get behind the other person’s back, which ends the dance, so both the girl and the boy attempt to prevent this, because whichever of the two manages to get behind the other person’s back, this person is declared the better dancer.

So, you can see how graciously Krisztina dances, yet her steps are very elaborate indeed. Talented dancers are acknowledged and loved in Roma communities, since they are the pride and joys of their culture and deservedly promote its beauty.
